The US military conducted airstrikes against an Iran-backed Houthi missile storage facility and command-and-control facility in Yemen’s capital, Sana’a, to disrupt and degrade Houthi operations, including attacks on US naval warships and merchant vessels in the Red Sea. The strikes were aimed at protecting US and coalition personnel, regional partners, and international shipping. The move came a day after a Houthi missile struck Israel’s commercial hub in Tel Aviv, wounding 16 people. The US is seeking to re-designate the Houthis as a terrorist group, which would make it harder for humanitarian organizations to operate in Houthi-controlled areas. The US also seeks global support to give the UN clearer powers to interdict ships heading for Houthi-controlled Yemen ports.
