The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) may extend its presence in southern Lebanon for an additional 30 days, as Hezbollah regroups and the fragile ceasefire between the two sides is expected to hold. The IDF has been deployed in the area since a cross-border clash in August, and its mandate is set to expire soon. Meanwhile, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has accused the IDF of destroying a border marker in a “flagrant violation” of international law. The UN has also continued to call for a timely Israeli withdrawal from the area. Despite the tensions, analysts believe that the ceasefire is likely to hold, citing the economic interests of both sides and the presence of international observers. The situation remains fragile, but a prolonged conflict appears unlikely at this time.
