Polish President Andrzej Duda has requested immunity from arrest for former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he attends the upcoming 76th anniversary of the Auschwitz-Birkenau liberation at the international camp in Poland. This follows an International Criminal Court (ICC) war crimes indictment against Netanyahu, who is accused of crimes against humanity, accusing him of being involved in the 2012 attack on a Gaza flotilla. As a result, he is now under a provisional arrest warrant. Duda has stated that Poland will “protect Netanyahu” and ensure that his representatives can attend the memorial ceremony without fear of arrest. The move is seen as a sign of goodwill between Poland and Israel, despite the EU’s position on the matter, which is that the ICC warrant remains in effect. The event is scheduled to take place on January 27 and is expected to be attended by international leaders and dignitaries.
