Romania has awarded a $60 million contract to Elbit Systems, an Israeli defense contractor, to supply a counter-unmanned aerial systems (UAS) solution, pulling out of a potential deal with Israel’s Rafael. The cancellation of the $60 million contract with Rafael is reportedly due to a string of errors on the part of the Israeli company. The counter-drone operations were initially intended for use by a NATO country in Europe, but Rafael’s mistakes lost them the contract. Elbit Systems, a rival defense contractor, ultimately secured the deal to provide its ReDrone system to the European nation. The contract is part of a broader effort to enhance the country’s security and counter the growing threat of UAS armed with explosives or weapons. Elbit Systems has reportedly secured significant contracts in the past, including a $1.5 billion deal with the US Marine Corps.
