Polish President Andrzej Duda has urged the government to guarantee Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s safety from arrest if he attends a commemoration in Poland marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The request comes after speculation arose that Netanyahu may skip the event due to the issuance of an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against him and his former chief Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Duda has called for assurances that Netanyahu’s visit will proceed “unhindered” and expressed confidence that an “adequate formula” can be found to reconcile Poland’s international legal obligations with the symbolic significance of the Auschwitz liberation.
